The WVU Orthopaedic Research Scholar opportunity will provide future clinician-scientists with an opportunity to produce research while engaging with world-class faculty, participating in the orthopaedic didactic curriculum and exploring clinical opportunities.
The WVU Orthopaedic Research Scholar is a unique opportunity for unmatched medical students to participate in a year-long research experience.
We are seeking motivated students who are eager to improve their orthopaedic research experience and engage in cutting-edge orthopaedic research.

• Wellness programs What you’ll do: Clinical Experience: As part of the research fellowship, we recognize the importance of understanding relevant clinical questions.
Therefore, the fellow will spend at one-half day per week in clinics or operating rooms on a rotating observership basis which will allow the fellow to engage with faculty, residents and other students while exploring additional research questions.
Scholars will also be invited to participate in weekly didactic conferences including grand rounds, indication conferences and journal clubs.
The success of the research fellow is important to our faculty, and the fellow will participate in a formal mentor/mentee relationship with designated faculty.
Research Experience: The WVU Orthopaedic Research Scholar opportunity is a funded one-year fellowship that will start after the match process completes and applications are reviewed.
The start date is flexible, but fellows are encouraged to participate as soon as possible based on the graduation requirements at their home institution.
The research fellowship is based on the tremendous success we have seen with our categorical match research track in which residents have presented at national and international conferences, published over 30 manuscripts over the last five years and gone on to successful careers in orthopaedic surgery.
Our department has clinical research personnel to assist with data collection, IRB submission and manuscript preparation.
Clinical faculty and departmental statisticians will assist with the completion of projects and presentation and publication of the work.
The goal is to provide a complete research experience that improves the fellow’s understanding of translational research.
Qualifications All applicants should have attained a bachelor’s degree and have completed the third year of medical school at an accredited program.
Applicants considering a career in orthopaedic surgery are preferred.
Completion of core clinical clerkships (e.
g.
current third-year or fourth-year medical student or medical school graduate) is expected.
Previous research experience is preferred with follow through to publication.
Experience making PowerPoint presentations and proficiency with data analysis.
Self-starter as well as a team player.
Strong work ethic and communication skills Experience with large database study preferred.
Ability to manage multiple projects.
Strong writing and editing skills.
Strong organizational skills.
Comfortable using Microsoft Office software as well as statistical software (e.
g.
, GraphPad Prism, SPSS, SAS).
